Stephine was surprised by MND’s positive, supportive atmosphere. She learned that despite what others told her, her goals were attainable after all. When asked about the most important work MND does, Stephine responded, “I think it saves lives.” She believes that the organization keeps people from isolation and gives them a more positive outlook. Stephine wants people to know how seriously the people of MND take their mission to help the clients become better individuals. Stephine believes that every staff member and volunteer at MND is important and helpful, like Sarah teaching computer skills or Daria’s ability to see exactly what people need.
When she is not giving back to Maryland New Directions, Stephine loves spending time with her two grandchildren, who are 11 and 6. “I am just a big kid. I like taking my grandkids to the park so I can go on the swings and play with them,” she said. She also loves doing arts and crafts, community work, and gardening with her family. “I didn’t know that simple things could bring so much joy,” she said.
