Christopher got involved with Maryland New Directions (MND) through his labor economics class. It is a part of a service-learning option to learn more about job seekers in the Baltimore area.
Christopher volunteers because he enjoys face-to-face interaction, helping others, and watching them succeed. He believes that it makes the volunteering fulfilling and enjoyable.
While volunteering with MND, Christopher has found that he is most surprised with how receptive every job seeker is to his assistance. He is also impressed by how open they are with him while they seek employment opportunities. It really allows him to assist them to the best of his abilities.
He believes the most important work that MND does is dealing with computer skills and training, such as in the way clients in the lab are encouraged to use the computers more so that they can be more familiar with technology.
Christopher wants people to know that even though MND searches for careers for clients; their main focus is teaching them how to present themselves in a way that will increase their employment opportunities. Through resume building, cover letter writing and interview training, these can be used by job seekers for the rest of their careers so they can always be moving forward in years to come after their experience with MND.
