Today, MND welcomed one of our largest group of mock interview guests yet! Sandy, Steve, Anika, Christy, Lee, Susan, Robin, Kevin, Christine, and Kanisha came from a variety of industries including banking, non-profit, insurance, etc. They interviewed clients one-on-one and as a panel, and then each shared a takeaway for our job-seeking clients!
-Kanisha told clients to take the word "try" out of their vocabulary. "Instead of saying 'I try to be a people person,' say, I am a people person," she said. This will come across as more confident to employers.
-Steve also shared about the importance of being confident in an interview. He cautioned against coming across as too confident though, and stressed the importance of finding a balance.
-Sandy noted how when interviewees spoke about their passions, they were more engaging to the employer. She urged clients to apply those passions when interviewing for a new job.
-Anika said, "don't let any one thing define you."
-Christy reminded clients to practice, practice, practice, and to come to the interview prepared. "Always have multiple copies of your resume," in preparation for a panel or succession interviews.
-Lee stressed the importance of being positive in the interview, even about negative experiences. "Go into the interview as if its already your job," he said.
-Susan shared: "Do your homework." Research about the company or business you are interviewing for and sell your fit with that place.
-Kevin agreed with Susan but added that knowing yourself is just as important. "Use specific examples from past experiences to illustrate your strongest moments," he said.
-Christine remarked that clients should "think like a business owner" in the interview.
-Robin was impressed with how well the clients connected to the employers but urged them not to get lost in the stories they tell. "Make sure you get the skills across that you are trying to illustrate through that story."
Overall our guests enjoyed their experience at MND and were impressed with clients' professionalism and preparedness. Way to go clients and thank you to all our guests for really making a difference! We hope you will spread the word about your experience and join us again!
