Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Yair came to Baltimore for college and then started his own mobile and web app development company. Yair spoke about what kinds of individuals he likes to hire at his company; it is more about the individual's personality, whether or not he or she is a team player, and less about his or her experience with the tools. "It is easy to pick up on a bad attitude," he said. Yair explained his philosophy of creating and finding business. "I like to think about how to get lucky in business," he said. "The more I am out there meeting people, the better chance I have of getting lucky." Yair also likes to think about what he can and cannot control. He said you can't control luck, but you CAN increase your chances of getting lucky by getting out there and talking to people. Yair also likes to take a little risk and think, "what's the worst that could happen?" If someone doesn't return his email, it's not a big deal, just on to the next prospect. Yair must maintain a balance between planning for the future in his position and managing the day-to-day goingson at his company. He expressed that it is important to have a plan, but also to keep the present moving. Overall, Yair says his greatest professional accomplishment is building a company where people are happy to go to work. One day, he would also like to build his own products as well as those for others.
Eleanor is a business owner, who has run her own motivational speaking business since 1997. Eleanor delivers lectures on motivational topics including, "98% of success is perseverance," among others. Her motivational presentations are based on her experience in the workforce; she has done everything from sell hamburgers at a fast food restaurant to work for a bank in New York City. Eleanor gave clients some self-esteem advice. She told them, "never compare yourself to anyone but yourself," and "know your strengths and weaknesses, and how to turn those weaknesses into strengths. Eleanor was driven to start her own business by her passion; this was something she wanted to do and could do. In order to get her leads for speaking engagements, Eleanor must take advantage of networking opportunities and make many cold calls. She describes her greatest professional accomplishment as being the time she spoke at the National Council for Self-Esteem's National Convention. She is looking forward to making new clients and reconnecting with old clients in the years to come.
