“My greatest piece of advice to my kids is to have mentors that surround you”, said Deborah Phelps. Debbie advises us all to learn and grow from our mistakes through being motivated to do better and reaching out to people who will encourage us. From a young age Debbie had a strong work ethic, self-determination, and an unconditional support system at home, which helped encourage her chase a career in a field she was passionate about, education. Debbie grew up in Allegany County Maryland, her father a carpenter and her mother a stay-at-home mom. Like most teens she faced obstacles that stood in the way of her pursing a higher education, but her determination was too great and nothing was going to hold her back. After high school Debbie enrolled in community college, later transferring to Fairmont State College where she received her B.A. in Education.
Ms. Phelps began her career in education as a teacher at Havre de Grace Middle School. She continued to grow in her field and went on to become the principal of Windsor Mill Middle School. As the Principal, Debbie knew all her students need the values her mother instilled in her, “… to have people listen to them… talk to them… respect who they were”. Debbie went above and beyond to make sure her kids had the best conditions and positive experience in school. After serving as Principal for over half a decade, Debbie was faced with a career opportunity that would take her away from her students. Torn between the two, Debbie knew that she’d be able to touch more lives as Director of The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools. The Education Foundation is a private, non-profit charitable organization that provides financial support for innovative programs and resources for students and teachers.
Mother, teacher, administrator, author, and director of The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, we want to honor Debbie Phelps as An Outstanding Career Person in Maryland! Thank you so much for sharing your words of wisdom and your career journey with us!
